Social Sciences, Associate of Science

The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Social Sciences is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a baccalaureate degree in one of the social or behavioral sciences. Social Sciences include academic disciplines such as anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology, and psychology. The A.S. in Social Sciences may also prepare students for some teacher certification programs.

Courses required for the Social Sciences degree are available on all four campuses.

1Some transfer universities only require a single math class while others require a math sequence such as MTH 154  / MTH 245  , MTH 154  / MTH 155  , MTH 161   /MTH 245 , MTH 161 /MTH 162 . Students may substitute higher-level mathematics courses. It is important students confer with a counselor to determine the appropriate mathematics courses for their intended transfer university.

A Fine Arts/Humanities Elective is recommended as one approved elective in Semester 3 for eligibility to earn the Certificate in General Education at the conclusion of Semester 3. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with an advisor or counselor to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the transfer university.

4Students may take any Psychology (PSY) course. Recommended courses include: PSY 215  , PSY 216  , PSY 230  , PSY 235  , and PSY 255  .

Recommended courses for Semester 2 include: BIO 101  , BIO 106  , ENV 121  , GOL 105  , GOL 110  , and GOL 111  . Recommended courses for Semester 3 include: BIO 102  , GOL 106  , CHM 111  , NAS 125   and PHY 100  .

6Students may take any Sociology (SOC) course. Recommended courses include: SOC 211  , SOC 215  , SOC 266  , and SOC 268  .

7Eligible courses are listed under General Education Core Requirements . Students should consult with an academic advisor or counselor to choose the appropriate course(s). Recommended courses for Semester 3 include: SOC 268  , HIS 122 , HIS 112 , and PSY 215  .

8Students may select from eligible Humanities courses identified under General Education Core Requirements . To satisfy the Humanities requirement, courses must be selected from two of the three categories: Artistic Expression; Literature and Creative Writing; or Human Culture. Students should consult with an academic advisor or counselor to choose the appropriate course(s).
