Maritime Technologies Specialization: Trades Technician, Associate of Applied Science

Individuals accepted into and completing the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprenticeship program now have an educational option in pursuit of an Associate of Applied Science Degree. NNSY Apprentices who complete the Tidewater Community College Career Studies Certificate - Trades Technician, the NNSY Apprentice program to obtain Journeyman status and additional college courses may earn the Associate of Applied Science Maritime Technologies - Specialization Trades Technician.

Students who have completed a registered apprenticeship, such as the DOLA Registered Apprenticeship Certificate, may be eligible to receive up to 15 credits toward the Maritime Technologies degree. Credit may be granted for MRT 120 , MRT 124 , MRT 126 , MRT 197 , MRT 297 , or additional approved elective credits, up to a total of 15 credits. Students should submit their Certificate of Completion to the Registrar’s Office for review. Additional information is available on the Registrar’s website.

The Maritime Technologies program is designed to prepare novice students for employment in a variety of areas within the maritime industry, to include the following: electrician, electronics technician, inside machinist, outside machinist, pipefitter, rigger, painter, carpenter, insulator, shipfitter, welder and sheetmetal worker. The program provides students with a comprehensive set of maritime industry-related skills.

Graduates of this Maritime Technologies specialization who have also completed a registered apprenticeship program will be prepared to apply for supervisory positions within the maritime industry or to pursue a career pathway to a university in a related program. Other specializations are offered, and TCC advisors and counselors are available to provide specific course information about these options.

Approved Mathematics Electives must be taken from the following: MTH 111  , MTH 131  , MTH 161  or higher.

Eligible courses are listed under General Education Core Requirements . Students should consult with an academic advisor or counselor to choose the appropriate course(s).

 Approved Electives may be satisfied by completing ENG 115 , NAS 115 , PSY 126 , and HLT 100 . Approved electives may also include any AIR, CAD, ELE, ETR, IND, MAC, MEC, MRT, SAF, and WEL courses. Additional courses and technical expertise/skills mastered by a journeyman may also be used to satisfy this requirement. Students should consult the designated academic advisor or academic dean for information. 

Credit for MRT 120 , MRT 124 , MRT 126 , MRT 197  and MRT 297  may be met through technical expertise and skills mastered by a journeyman.
